his is the beginning of an oil painting of some Siberian irises from my garden. Since the flowers were long gone when I began this piece I worked from a composite of photo's I took with my digital camera.
Towards the right you'll see the tonal drawing where I worked out my darks and lights in charcoal. At this stage of the painting I'm doing the same thing using an series of base coats of oil paint which you can see mixed on the palette. This is a grisaille underpainting.
